The fear of monsters, vampires, werewolves, witches, ghosts, haunted houses, demonic possession, medical and psychological evil, the occult and supernatural is the stuff of horror stories. The reader wants to discover how the protagonist overcomes the demons that beset him.

H.P. Lovecraft(1890-1937) is often consdiered the father of modern horror fiction. In his Cthulhu Mythos, an expelled race wants to take possession of earth again. He states, "All my tales are based on the fundamental premise that common human laws and emotions have no validity or significance in the cosmos-at-large.

Stephen King (1947 - ) His stores define the horror genre. He has been described as one of the best storytellers of our time, depicting the nightmare of our idealistic civilization. He received an honorary National Book Award in 2003.
