Young adult books are generally written for the middle and high school age reader. In practice, this is somewhat misleading as sometimes children will start reading in young adult as early as 5th or 6th grade, especially if they are good readers, and while good readers in the high school years have often moved to adult books, many high schoolers continue to read young adult books throughout and sometimes even a few years beyond high school.
